Aimed at students beginning the Hebrew language, Spurell’s informative book is an in-depth study of the English translation of Genesis, with a special focus on grammar. It also includes two noteworthy appendices: the first dealing with the structure of Genesis, and the other, a discussion of the various names of God used in different translations.

NOTES ON GENESIS 1 1. בראשׁית. ‘In the beginning,’ as ἐν ἀρχῇ, in John 1:1; not ἐν τῇ ἀρχῇ. בראשׁית is without the article, like בְּאָחוֹר, Prov. 29:11; בְּיָד, Is. 28:2; קֶ֑רִי, Lev. 26:27. The Vss. and most commentators render, ‘In the beginning God created,’ etc.: the same rendering is perhaps indicated by the accents, בראשׁית being marked off by Ṭifcha from what follows1.
